I am dipping into my archives here because I am looking for feedback.
These two images were scanned from (8x12) prints of pictures I took over 15 years ago.
Unfortunately I left the negatives in Damascus in September 2000 because I expected to return within a few months and have not been able to. I expect that all my negatives have been destroyed in the intervening years.
So the question is: are these scanned photos good enough?
What do you recommend for preserving precious memories like this?

As to the images themselves: This is a fisherman who lives in the island of Arwad, Syria's only island. It was originally settled by the Phoenicians about 3,500 years ago. The sheltered harbour and its proximity to the shore make it a very strategic holding. In medieval times, it was occupied and heavily fortified by a number of Crusader troops. Those fortifications were more recently used as a prison, but today the densely populated island is home to many families that make their living by fishing.

I look forward to your critiques on the images (and whether you think they work as a diptych) and any advice you have about scanning.

Hi Silke,
Each half of the image could hold a proud position on TL, but together each becomes dynamic...one showing the other a stage in the working life of the man repairing the net.
The scanning is a little soft but I think that it adds a soothing effect on the finished image. Lovely work.
Best wishes,

oow boy.. I love these old crafts!
I really like the colors you have captured and the combination of the two images makes a complete picture...
Great work!

Well I could give you advice.. do what your doing! It is a fabulous composition. The colour and detail came thru beautifully. Excellent. As to preserving them, a back up of this will keep it around for a long long time. I can't image the original is better.TFS

Hallo Silke,

Scanned photos???? Excellent scans.
And for 15 years ago, they are very good captures.
TFS your history

Interesting idea - good photo:)

I remember seeing those image as i was very young. It's a hard work. What we see here is not the hardest part! I enjoy that way! You catch well the mood! I enjoy the complex texture of the net and it's floats...

Hi Silke,
Excellent idea to preserve this precious archives. Well about your question: "So the question is: are these scanned photos good enough?" I think that this is a beautiful montage and a good work after scanning each photo. However, IMHO, the colors could be improved. I propose you a workshop for illustrated my point of view.
Bravo and best regards! Annie

Hello Silke,
Wonderful shown works from yours wonderful archives picture. Marvelous photo and the colors in the picture also perfect the light and the contrast. Congratulate.

Hello My Friend,

I don't think you have any sort of a problem here! The images are sharp, detailed, full of life (well one is) and colour! I would be happy just to post them and let everyone enjoy sharing them!

They look like excellent shots to me and are well worth saving. This is a great composition and you should be proud of it.

Hi Silke

A good daily life scene of the man & his repair work to the fishing net. Excellent dof & sharpness. The diptych works fine a series of photojournalistic images, that nicely correlate. Tfs!

Hi Silke
very good candid photo in a good composition.
Gr Jos

Hello Silke
I like blue tones and expresson of fisherman's face.
Good framing and presentation.
A masterpiece my friend

Well probably scan them - work on them if needed and store them on different CD's. However I have heart that there is quite a quality difference - there seem to be some with a golden layered finish on them and pictures stay better after a few years - but really I don't exactly know.
Yes Silke they are totally good enough. How lucky that you have been there!

This is interesting Silke - so good to see the fisherman using the old ways to repair the nets - something we really don't see here.
I like how you have set the 2 pics together - that's good.
And being scanned - it isn't too soft, colours are ok, they've come out well. I find a lot of my old film photos aren't too sharp!! So well done

Of course, it's perfectly fine! Nice work...old photos tend to turn purple though, so I posted a WS with color correction! Hope you like it!

Hi Silke,
Fantastic colours, very nice composition.
I think that these scanned photos are really good enough.
Thanks for sharing these old memories with us.

Hello Silke !

Looks like my old photo prints are good for the garbage too !
Scanner are helpful, but not as good as todays digital photography .

I find both photos very clean and sharp. The color corrections made both by Annie and Linda are excellent !

Purchasing a scanner to treat negatives and color slides was one of my projects , but I do not see the day when I will have time to work on these thousaxnds of photos !!!

Neat presentation!

fantastic image Silke!! it's a beautiful job.. i love the details.. the full atmosfere.. color in violet! expression!.. it's great!!! brava! in my favorite! ;)
ciao Marco

Hi Silke, this is a well done duo image. I like to see the man working on his net then the other image: his work of art.
Good combination.
The ws have corrected the magenta/red cast.

You did very well! Yan :)

ps: Many thx for the great review on "Morning Mist on Pink Lake". I am very pleased that you like it.

Lovely combination, scans are good !
Only, I find the colour in the WS better.

Will try to have more info on " how to scan best ".
Backup ...
I never use a CD or DVD as a backup !
Don't trust them.
I only use them if I want to give someone photos or data.
I go for at least 2 external USB-drives.
Let's say 500 MB. They won't cost you an arm-and-a-leg.
One of the two is almost never " in the house ". You rotate them.
So you have the photos on your harddisk, the same photos on the external HD in the house,
almost all photos on the one you put by friends, neighbours, bank, ...
( I don't only save photos on it, also data like letters etc )
You can even opt for a " internet-disk " .
Hope I give you something to think about.

Hi Silke
First it is a very good collage
Second we can see that it is a scan.
I think you have to add a bit of yellow
Controlling the colours or restoring them is a very special technique.
Manny books are written on this difficult part of photography

Hello Silke

Beautiful visual!
in a certain way, she has to do with me, a daily landscape for who lives at an island.
I like soft and soft colors.
Beautiful composition!

Great pic here Silke. The scan is perfect, the colours may be very slightly off but I don't think it as anything to do with the scan itself. I'm sure just a little touch of with some pp would easily fix the little shift in colours you had with the original photo. I scanned a few old slides and found the Kodachrome 25 maintained their colours very well.
